I’ll give you 18 to 1 odds President Coleman’s Harvard’s next president

By Karl Stampfl, written on Aug. 25, 2006

If you’re bored of betting on college football or playing late-night dorm poker, welcome to the next sexiest way to lay your tuition on the line: Bet on who’s going to be Harvard University’s next president.

A gambling website, bodog.com, is handicapping the potential candidates to replace Lawrence Summers. The site is accepting bets from $5 to $50.

The favorite is Havard Law School Dean Elena Kagan at 3 to 1. Harvard Provost Stephen Hyman is at 7 to 2, and Stanford Provost John Etchemendy is at 4 to 1.

Then there’s the hometown favorite: University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman is at 18 to 1.

Former U of M President Lee Bollinger, who defected for Columbia University and was replaced by Coleman, is also on the list.

The Unabomber holds a garage sale

By Karl Stampfl, written on Aug. 11, 2006

For the occasion when a diamond just doesn’t cut it as that perfect gift, there’s always Ted Kaczynski’s Great Neck #50 hacksaw or his red “Le Watch”-brand watch.

The smokinggun.com reports that a judge ordered the auction of objects belonging to Kaczynski (a.k.a. University alum, a.k.a. the Unabomber). The proceeds from the Internet rummage sale will go to the victims of Kaczynski’s 17-year rampage.

He owes $15 million in restitution. That’s a lot of hooded sweatshirts.

The list includes:
The complete Unabomber outfit: Green Hooded jacket, pair of glasses
Samsonite briefcase containing University of Michigan degrees
Books: Axiomatization of the Theory of Relativity, Edible Wild Plants, Know Your Rights, Of Mice and Men, Psychology of Women
Knives and other sharp objects: Forging pliers, hack saw blade, hand drill, long-bladed black handle knife, welding mask
Montana driver’s license

The Elite Eight

By Karl Stampfl, written on Apr. 7, 2006

Thousands entered. One will win. For now, it’s down to eight.

Big Ten Burrito has narrowed down the entries to rename the restaurant to eight after its copyright infringement riff with the Big Ten Conference. The eight finalists:

BTB Burrito
Grande Ten Burrito
Big Eleven Burrito (suggested on this blog but not officially submitted by this blogger)
B10 Burrito
Big Time Burrito
Big X Burrito
Burrito Del Barrio
Bigger Than Ten Burrito

It seems as though the submission “Fuck You Big Ten Conference Burrito” was left off the list.

Fans can vote online at www.bigtenburrito.com until April 24 and receive $1 off a purchase of $6 or more.

Faculty letter protesting Big House skyboxes

By Karl Stampfl, written on Apr. 2, 2006

Below is the complete text of the letter past and present faculty and administrators sent to the University Board of Regents last week urging them to vote against putting skyboxes in Michigan Stadium.

Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1340

Dear Regents:

We write as faculty members deeply concerned about the proposed addition of private luxury boxes to Michigan Stadium. Often described euphemistically as “premiumâ€

Need a campus legacy? Rename Big Ten Burrito

By Karl Stampfl, written on Mar. 27, 2006

Big Ten Burrito needs a new name because the Big Ten athletic conference is suing them for trademark infringement. They’re asking you to name it. Submit names to the store at 810 S. State Street and 50 years from now you can tell people at a football game that you renamed BTB. And if you don’t win, you get $1 off your food purchase just for entering.

Submissions will be accepted until April 10. After that, you’ll be able to vote for a winner in the store and online.

There are 11 teams in the Big Ten. My suggestion is caling it Big 11 Burrito. No one has thought that’s funny yet. Be the first.

Want a gun?

By Karl Stampfl, written on Mar. 27, 2006

The College Libertarians want to give you one.

The group will give away a real firearm to a lucky winner “for personal protection” on Monday, April 3 at 8 p.m. in the Pendleton Room of the Michigan Union.

“The College Libertarians are sponsoring this event to promote the right to keep and bear arms and raise awareness of gun rights issues on the University of Michigan campus,” the group wrote in an e-mail promoting the event.

According to Jeremy Linden, chair of the College Libertarians, the gun will be real.

The group plans on skirting the law that says it’s illegal to carry guns on University property by never having the gun on University property. They’ll determine the winner at the event and then take him or her to buy a gun from a dealer or from a member who donated one.

In either case, the whole thing will be legal, Linden said. The winner will have to be of proper age, obtain a purchase permit and agree to a background check.
